Jessica Van Dusen So, you want to start a blog (or weblog). But where do you begin? These online journals require frequent updating with quality content to ensure that one-time readers become dedicated fans. Once you have selected your topic(s) you will need to:
- Find a blogging software provider. Similar to signing up for an online email account, create an account with an online blogging software provider. Some popular free online providers include: Blogger (operated by Google), LiveJournal and WordPress.com.
- Select a design from the available templates. Each provider offers a variety of pre-existing layouts to choose from and personalize.
- Select interactive features. Items like comment boxes, guest books, etc. can be added to your site to keep it dynamic.
- Select privacy settings. Indicate whether you would like your site to be open to the public or more private (closed only to a few selected followers).
- Add content. Now, for the fun stuff, post your first few articles and images.
- Spread the word. Advertise and market your blog to existing contacts through social networking outlets such as e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
