So, you want to start a blog (or weblog). But where do you begin? These online journals require frequent updating with quality content to ensure that one-time readers become dedicated fans. Once you have selected your topic(s) you will need to:

  1. Find a blogging software provider. Similar to signing up for an online email account, create an account with an online blogging software provider. Some popular free online providers include: Blogger (operated by Google), LiveJournal and WordPress.com.

  2. Select a design from the available templates. Each provider offers a variety of pre-existing layouts to choose from and personalize.

  3. Select interactive features. Items like comment boxes, guest books, etc. can be added to your site to keep it dynamic.

  4. Select privacy settings. Indicate whether you would like your site to be open to the public or more private (closed only to a few selected followers).

  5. Add content. Now, for the fun stuff, post your first few articles and images.

  6. Spread the word. Advertise and market your blog to existing contacts through social networking outlets such as e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
