One of the most popular models for instructional design is ADDIE. This step-by-step approach offers an effective and efficient design method across five phases:

  1. Analyze: Identify the needs and constraints of the user (e.g. existing knowledge, skill level). Determine any technical and structural requirements for the instructional materials (e.g. duration, organization).
  2. Design: Identify the instructional goals and establish measurable learning objectives. Create lesson plans and activities and a storyboard of how those lesson plans will play out (i.e. a screen-by-screen mock-up of the course, making additional note of any audio, navigation and interactive components). Allow two or more users to review the storyboard.
  3. Develop: Create the course using the provided or selected content and appropriate multimedia. This may include: animations and video, audio, games, infographics (i.e. graphics that provide visual representations of data), interactive graphics and maps, PDF files, polls, Q&A, quizzes, scenarios, slideshows, text, timelines, etc. Allow two or more users to test the course.
  4. Implement: Deliver, manage and track the course.
  5. Evaluate: Perform an evaluation of the course to ensure all learning goals and objectives are being meet.
